What to Avoid Before a Boudoir Photo Shoot

Writer: Alicia SchmittAlicia Schmitt

So, you’ve booked your boudoir session—yay! I am so excited for you! Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, boudoir sessions are such an incredible way to celebrate yourself, your body, and your unique story. But let’s talk about how to make sure you show up feeling your absolute best. There are a few things you’ll want to avoid before your session to ensure you’re comfortable, confident, and ready to shine.

Here’s your guide to what not to do before your boudoir shoot:

1. Skipping Meals or Over-Restricting

It can be tempting to skip a meal or try to “crash diet” before your session, but let me stop you right there. Boudoir isn’t about looking a certain way; it’s about capturing the beautiful, authentic version of YOU. Skipping meals can leave you feeling tired, lightheaded, or irritable—not the vibe we’re going for! Instead, focus on nourishing your body in a way that feels good for you. A balanced meal before your session can help you feel energized and ready to crush it.

2. Over-Exfoliating or Trying New Skin Products

We all love the idea of glowing skin, but now isn’t the time to experiment with new skincare routines or aggressive exfoliation. New products can sometimes irritate your skin, and over-exfoliating (I'm looking at you, chemical peels!) might leave you red or blotchy. Stick with what you know works for your skin, and let your natural glow shine through.

3. Spray Tanning (Trust Me on This One!)

Spray tans and boudoir don’t mix well. Even the best spray tans can sometimes leave streaks or uneven patches that the camera will pick up. Plus, certain lingerie fabrics can cling to or stain from tanning products. If you love the sun-kissed look, embrace your natural glow instead, and let the lighting do the work to enhance your skin tone beautifully.

4. Wearing Tight Clothing Right Before Your Shoot

Avoid wearing anything tight—like leggings, bras, or socks—for a few hours leading up to your session. Tight clothing can leave marks on your skin, and while these can fade, they’re not ideal for photos. Opt for loose-fitting clothes instead and give your skin a chance to breathe.

5. Stressing Over Perfection

I know this is easier said than done, but hear me out: boudoir is not about being perfect. It’s about embracing the beautiful, perfectly imperfect human that you are. If you’re stressing over every little detail—whether it’s a blemish, a stray hair, or something else—let it go. I promise, the magic happens when you show up as YOU.

At the end of the day, your boudoir session is all about celebrating yourself. Avoiding these common pitfalls can help you feel more comfortable and confident when you step in front of the camera. And don’t worry—I’ll be there to guide you every step of the way, so you can focus on feeling empowered and radiant!
